Overview of Ligue 1

Ligue 1 football hosts some of the most globally regarded football players and teams in the world. Each year football bettors wager millions of pounds on Ligue 1. Nearly 8 millions fans attend their games each season. It is commonly known to french speaking individuals as Ligue Un. The top French football league is undoubtedly the most popular sport in France and well known across Europe. After all 20 teams in Ligue 1 complete 38 games, the team with the most points wins the league. At the end, each team will have played every team in the league twice, once at home and another away. This format ensures that one team doesn’t get more of an advantage over the other. Playing at home in Ligue 1 Football is a huge advantage and should be considered when predicting match outcomes.

After a season, the top two teams are automatically guaranteed a place in the group stage of the Champions League. The team that finishes in third place is granted a Champions League playoff spot. This means they enter the competition in its third stage of qualification.

Ligue 1 results also decide which teams will participate in the Europa League next season. Teams placing fourth out of 20 will go straight to the Europa League. The alternative two spots granted to the french football teams are awarded to the winners of the two French Cups, Coup de France and the Coup de la ligue.

The relegation zone

At the end, the last two teams are demoted from the Ligue 1 to Ligue 2. The teams who finish in the top three positions in Ligue 2 get promoted to Ligue 1 the upcoming season. The third place team of Ligue 2 will have a playoff against the team finishing third last in Ligue 1. The winner of the playoff moves to Ligue 1 the next season, and the loser is relegated/stays in Ligue 2.

History of Ligue 1 football

The National was established in 1932/33. Prior to this, there wasn’t any form of professional football in France. Originally the league was made up of 20 teams, and then split into groups of 10. The winners of each group would go head to head to decide the champions of the league. The bottom three teams from each group would get relegated to the second division. Finally, a more traditional promotion/relegation system started in 1934/35 when the league was cut to 14 teams and renamed Division 1.

Following WWII the league added 4 spots to make a total of 18 teams in the league. In 1965/66 the number of spots was increased again to 20. It wasn’t until 2002 that the league rebranded, changing the name to Ligue 1. Over the years Ligue 1 has been one of the most well rounded leagues in Europe. 19 clubs have won the league, and 12 teams have won two or more times. Out of this evenly matched group of teams, Saint-Etienne has had the most success, winning the title 10 times.
